A jukebox, a pool table and a dartboard are all in the plans. So is a dance floor of 191 square feet, in a West Florence Avenue room that's been empty since Club Reno closed in 2021.

A project called Robles Lounge is trying to move into 1437 and 1439 W. Florence Ave. in South Los Angeles with beer and wine, live entertainment and public dancing, What Now Los Angeles reported, citing public filings. The application says Club Reno opened there in 1985. That's 36 years of one bar on one corner before the lights went off.

Nothing in the filing tries to turn the place into something else. On paper it's a neighborhood bar: 1,890 square feet, 38 seats inside, a 271-square-foot bar, eight parking spaces and room for live bands of no more than three players. The hours it lists are 4 p.m. to midnight, every day of the week.

I'd call that the smartest thing about it. What Now's headline calls Robles Lounge a "concept," but the plan itself sounds like the bar that was already there: beer, wine, a trio, a game of pool. A room that lasted 36 years on Florence didn't need reinventing. It needed to be open.

It isn't open yet, and it might not be for a while. The filing lists Magali Llerenas as the applicant. What Now asked her about a timeline and didn't hear back before publishing, so there's no opening date yet.

The street around the old club isn't standing still, either. What Now has also reported plans for a 27-unit apartment building down the same stretch, at 1204 and 1206 W. Florence Ave. It's one of several new projects along this part of the avenue, which makes it rarer to see an old bar come back as more or less the same bar.

For anyone who spent a Friday night at Club Reno, the plan reads like the old room with a new name on it: a band of three, a jukebox, darts on the wall and the doors shut at midnight.
