Accessibility

The LA Globe should work for every reader, including people who use a screen reader, move around with a keyboard instead of a mouse, zoom in, or need stronger contrast. This page says what the site does today, what we know is still wrong, and how to tell us about a problem. It is dated, so you can tell when it was last true.

How we checked

In September 2026 we ran an automated accessibility checker (axe-core) and a keyboard test on five pages: the front page, a story, and the City, Food and Games pages. On those pages the check found:

a text description for screen readers on every picture;
no empty links or buttons, and nothing that traps the keyboard;
nothing that plays sound or video by itself, and nothing that stops you zooming in;
a visible outline on every link and button reached with the keyboard.

What we fixed after that check

A skip link on every page. Press Tab once and a "Skip to content" link appears in the top corner. It jumps past the top bar and the section menu to where the page's own content starts.
A labelled comment form. Each box on the comment form now tells a screen reader what it is for, and the message that says your comment arrived is read out too.

What is not right yet

Some small text is too faint to read easily: the photo credits on the Food page and some red labels on the City page.
The keyboard outline is hard to see on the City, Politics and Games pages.
On the Food page, the map's pop-up does not move the keyboard into itself when it opens.
The daily games themselves were not part of the check. A game you play by dragging or aiming may not work with a keyboard or a screen reader.

These are on the list to fix. When one is fixed, it comes off this page and the date at the top changes.

The standard we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site does not meet all of it yet; the list above is where it falls short, as far as we know.

If something on this site does not work for you, write to editor@thelaglobe.com with "Accessibility" in the subject line. Tell us the page's address and what went wrong. If you use a screen reader, a magnifier or another tool, say which one; it helps us see the problem the way you did.

If a problem on the site stops you reading a story, say so in the same email and we will send you its text.
