Taylor Swift Played Dakota Johnson's Breakup Therapist on 'SNL'
Swift traded jokes about Johnson's musician exes, then came back at the goodnights carrying a birthday cake for the host.

Taylor Swift crashed Dakota Johnson's "Saturday Night Live" monologue on Saturday night, cast as the friend Johnson had just introduced to the studio audience as her therapist.
Swift set her straight. She isn't a therapist, she said. Johnson just turns up at her house every week holding a wine bottle that's already empty, sprawls on the couch, overshares and gets sent home with Pedialyte in a car driven by Swift's security, Variety reported. When the cast came out for the goodnights, Swift brought the host a birthday cake.
The bit paid off a monologue Johnson had spent mostly on her love life. Since her last time hosting, she said, she'd gone through two public breakups with musicians. Variety identified them as Coldplay's Chris Martin and Role Model. She joked that her new film, "Verity," and dating musicians belong to the same genre, the psychosexual thriller, and then landed her best line: "Some people leave concerts with merch, and I leave concerts with a two-and-a-half-year relationship."
With Swift beside her, Johnson went back to the subject. Dating musicians was a public service, she argued: "Ladies, I am saving you a lot of money on Zoloft." She said America should thank her, then England, then parts of Ireland, and finished on Cleveland, which Variety read as a nod to Travis Kelce. The reply was one word: "Allegedly."
Swift then announced that it was Johnson's birthday, a few hours early, since Johnson had said earlier in the monologue that it started at midnight. One fan on X called Swift's entrance a "Taylor Swift jump scare," Variety reported.
It was Swift's first time on screen in Studio 8H in three years. Her last appearance was in October 2023, when she introduced Ice Spice, her partner on a remix. Swift has hosted the show just once, in 2009. She's been the musical guest five times, most recently in 2021, and made cameos in a 2014 monologue and a 2015 "Californians" sketch.
She wasn't there to sing, since Turnstile had been booked as the musical guest long before. Fans had been looking for clues since the Emmys, where Swift appeared in a "Law & Order: SVU" sketch with a big "Saturday Night Live" logo pinned to a bulletin board behind her. She and Johnson had also just worked together. Johnson and Colin Farrell play a rich couple in a marriage that's coming apart in Swift's "Patient Zero" video, which Swift directed and premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27. On Saturday, Swift released an eight-minute extended cut with behind-the-scenes footage on Apple Music only.
Saturday's show came a week into the season, Variety reported. On only its second episode, the music star at the center of the night wasn't on the bill and didn't perform a song.
The premiere had gone to a different act. Katseye, the girl group built in L.A., played the season premiere, the Globe reported on Sept. 27.
Viewers in Los Angeles saw it late. NBC's L.A. station didn't air the episode until 8:41 p.m. Pacific time, Variety reported, because USC's game against Washington ran nine minutes past 11 p.m. Eastern and stations wanted to keep their full half-hour of local news. That made it two Saturdays in a row that a USC game pushed "SNL" back in most markets. It was also the second time in a week that Swift fans had to follow her on social media instead of live TV, after a game ran long and her VMAs appearance on CBS was delayed, too.
