Shooting Near Moss Landing State Beach Leaves Multiple Dead, Sheriff Says
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office says others were hurt in the gunfire on Jetty Road just after midnight Monday.

A shooting just after midnight Monday on the road to Moss Landing State Beach left multiple people dead, Monterey County sheriff's officials said.
In a short statement Monday morning, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said the shooting on Jetty Road had caused "multiple fatalities and casualties," KPIX reported, and that there was no active threat to the community. The office hasn't said how many people were killed or hurt, who they are or anything about possible suspects, the Pajaronian reported. It hasn't said what led to the shooting either.
Jetty Road is about half a mile of pavement. It leaves Highway 1 just north of the Elkhorn Slough bridge and runs behind the sand dunes to a dirt parking lot near the north jetty of Moss Landing Harbor, according to the Watsonville paper. It's a regular spot for people who fish and go to the beach, just north of the small fishing town of Moss Landing on Monterey Bay. Birdwatchers come for the wetlands next door.
On Monday, California State Parks police closed both the road and the beach at the sheriff's request. Sheriff's deputies and detectives were still at the scene that morning, the Pajaronian reported, and sheriff's Cmdr. Andres Rosas confirmed the timing: shortly after midnight.
The early reports line up on the basics: the hour, the road, the dead and wounded and no ongoing danger. Bay City News, in a story carried by ABC7, put the shooting at the state beach itself. ABC7 Los Angeles was vaguer, placing the gunfire close to the beach.
By Monday evening, the sheriff's office said it wouldn't release anything more while the investigation goes on, Bay City News reported. The number of dead and their names will come from the sheriff whenever the office speaks again.
