The Victorian, a restaurant and nightclub on Santa Monica's Main Street, said Monday it's closing after 20 years. The Santa Monica Daily Press reported Tuesday that the site is set to become a members club with a pool, as city records show.

The farewell the venue posted on Instagram didn't say a word about what comes next. The city had settled that months earlier.

The Victorian sits on land Santa Monica owns. On March 24, the City Council voted 7-0 to move the lease at 2640 Main St. to a new company, The Santamonican Club, LLC. The item went through on the consent calendar, and according to the meeting minutes, nobody pulled it for discussion.

A city staff report calls the new place "a family-based recreation, events, and wellness facility for members." The plans start with a new pool and a spa, and add a fitness center, a space for families and kids, a coffee bistro and a restaurant with a bar.

The deal keeps some of the property public. Under the lease terms, up to 20% of the club's membership slots would go free, as scholarships, to Santa Monica residents who qualify.

The lot's 25 public parking spaces will stay open to everyone, and so will the lawn next to the California Heritage Museum. The operator also has to keep backing the Sunday Main Street Farmers Market, which sets up in that lot.

The rest is less clear. A concept site plan shows a "Family Park" and "Family Gardens" behind the property's two historic houses, and the report doesn't say whether non-members can use them. The records don't give a membership price or an opening date either.

Monday's goodbye stuck to the bar's own two decades. "After 20 incredible years, The Victorian is closing its doors," the post read, "but not before we say thank you."
