Your trash still gets picked up in Pasadena on Veterans Day, and so do any bulky items you already scheduled. Nearly everything else with a city counter closes for the day.

Pasadena City Hall, every Pasadena Public Library branch, the City Service Center and the Permit Center will be closed Nov. 11, the City of Pasadena said in a holiday notice posted Wednesday on cityofpasadena.net. The libraries, the service center and the permit counter reopen Nov. 12.

Free meters are how a holiday turns into a ticket. All of Pasadena's parking meters are free Nov. 11, and the city won't enforce time limits. It will still ticket cars parked at red curbs, in "No Parking" zones, in front of fire hydrants or overnight. Every regular parking rule comes back Nov. 12.

Here's what keeps running on the holiday:

  • Pasadena Transit and Pasadena Dial-A-Ride, both on their normal schedules.
  • Pasadena police and firefighters, who stay on duty for patrols, the jail, paramedic calls and other emergencies. Both departments' business and administrative offices close for the day.
  • City parks, which are open for picnics and play. The city isn't taking site reservations for the day.

If you have city business that can't wait, go in this order:

  1. Permits. The Permit Center counter is closed. Subtrade permits still go through Permit Center Online, and so do plans for additions, accessory dwelling units, tenant improvements and new buildings. The counter reopens Nov. 12.
  2. Utility bills. Pasadena Water and Power's customer service call center is closed. You can still check your account and pay by phone at (626) 744-4005 or online at PWPweb.com.
  3. Power or water emergencies. Call Pasadena Water and Power at (626) 744-4673 for power and (626) 744-4138 for water.
  4. Everything else for the city. The City Service Center is closed Nov. 11 and reopens Nov. 12 with its regular 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours. The city says it's also reachable online and at (626) 744-7311.
  5. Police. Report suspicious activity at (626) 744-4241. Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.

City Hall will be closed for business that morning, but the public can still come to its Veterans Day ceremony at 100 N. Garfield Ave., which runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The city's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and the Pasadena Veterans Day Planning Committee host it, according to an Oct. 21 city announcement. This year's theme marks the 250th anniversary of American independence and the history of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps.

The keynote speaker, Sandra Rhoten, served in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970 with the American Red Cross. The city says she was one of 627 women chosen to support troops in combat zones. Nicknamed "Donut Dollies," the women rode helicopters out to forward locations, bringing troops hot coffee and donuts made fresh.

The Condor Squadron will do a flyover at 11:11 a.m. The ceremony also has free hot dogs.

On Nov. 12, the closed counters reopen and every parking rule applies again.
