California Ran Out of License Plate Numbers. New Ones Are Out.

The new format is three numerals, three letters, one numeral, and the DMV expects it to last about 40 years.

California's license plates changed sequence this year for the first time since 1980. The new format flips the old one: three numerals, then three letters, then a single numeral, written out as 000AAA0. Ronald Ongtoaboc, a public information officer at the California Department of Motor Motor Vehicles, described the pattern in a September 14, 2026 email to the USA Today Network, the Desert Sun reported.

They're already on the street. The DMV says it began both producing and issuing the new plates earlier in 2026, and that some of them are on registered vehicles right now — which means a car parked on your block in Los Angeles may be wearing one, and nobody sent up a flare when it happened. The department hasn't released a start date.

That detail tripped up the coverage. The Los Angeles Times corrected its own story on September 14, 2026, after reporting that the new sequence hadn't been issued yet; the correction says issuance started earlier in the year. ABC7 reported on September 12, 2026 that it wasn't clear when the plates would first turn up on vehicles.

The pattern that's ending had a 46-year run. “The long-existing California license plate 9-series configuration, which began with 1AAA000 in 1980, ended with the production of the 9ZZZ999 plate this year,” Ongtoaboc told the Los Angeles Times.

1AAA000 was stamped the year the Dodgers finished second in the National League West. 9ZZZ999 came off the line this year.

The arithmetic is why the change happened at all. “Each configuration has over 100 million plate combinations,” Ongtoaboc said in the email to the USA Today Network, and the department expects the new sequence to last roughly 40 years based on how fast it burned through the last one.

Nothing about the look is different. It's the same white background and red lettering; the new sequence is a mirror of the old arrangement rather than a redesign, per the DMV's description of the reverse series configuration.

The first plate issued under it was 000AAA1. The last one will read 999ZZZ9, and by the DMV's own estimate that's about four decades out.
