Trump Ordered Lake Ontario Renamed 'Lake America.' Google Maps Is Following.

The new label reaches every Google Maps user in the United States, Los Angeles included; Canada's Ontario borders the lake.

President Trump signed an executive order on August 27, 2026 calling for Lake Ontario to be renamed Lake America. Two days later, Google Maps said it would start using the new name for people searching from inside the United States, 404 Media reported.

Los Angeles is inside the United States, so the label arrives here the way every map change arrives — in the app you opened to find a parking structure, attached to a lake you weren't looking for.

At the signing, per 404 Media's account, Trump sat next to a poster board showing the Great Lakes. A red arrow pointed at Lake Ontario, carrying the name "Lake America," under the line "Making the Great Lakes Even Greater." The outlet ran a screenshot taken from White House video posted to YouTube.

The lake isn't only ours. Ontario, the Canadian province, runs along its north, west and southwest shores, and New York State holds the south and the east, the outlet reported.

Commentary, labeled as commentary: the name is the small part of this. One U.S. order moved the label on a lake whose opposite shore belongs to another country, and it moved in two days, on a product most people don't think of as holding a position on anything.

Google framed the change around users in the United States. What the company announced is a change in what its own product displays, which isn't the same act as changing what a lake is called on the other side of the water.
