'The Traitors' Is the Best-Written Show on TV. Peacock Bought Four More Years.

Seven Emmys in one year and a 72 percent ratings jump bought the Scotland-set Alan Cumming series four more years.

Peacock ordered three more seasons of "The Traitors" on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, enough to carry the show through an eighth season. That order sits on top of a renewal that already ran to season five, which returns in January with Alan Cumming hosting, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Here's my position, and I'll hold it at any dinner table: it's the best-constructed show on television, and the money arrived late.

The people this order pays aren't the ones you'd guess. Reality television usually gets renewed for being cheap, and this one got renewed after a season that won Emmys for directing, cinematography, production design, costumes and picture editing — the crews who'd be first out the door if the genre really were the lesser shelf.

Seven trophies went to that one season, including best reality competition program and best host. No competition series had ever won that many in a single year, THR reported.

Cumming's host trophy was his third in a row.

Now the machine, which is the actual argument. Twenty-three players start as Faithfuls, Cumming taps a typical three of them as Traitors, and those three kill off a Faithful every night while everyone else tries to vote the liars out at the table. Studio Lambert produces it, from a Dutch original. A drama room would trade a year's budget for a device that guarantees a betrayal, a decision and a public vote in every single episode.

I first read the three-season pickup as a ratings purchase. Season four, won by the "Love Island U.S." alum Rob Rausch, was the show's biggest yet for the streamer, with viewership up 72 percent over the prior season, Peacock said, per THR. But nobody stacks three seasons on top of a renewal that already reached five in order to buy one cast. Peacock bought the structure.

The strongest thing anyone says against all this: the writing isn't writing. Producers cast for friction and editors build the suspense afterward, so crediting a script credits an assembly line for a card trick. Fine — every script is an assembly line too, staffed and rewritten and cut. The test is whether the shape holds when the parts change, and a crafts ballot is a room full of people whose job is knowing the difference.

The stress test airs before you can finish arguing with me. "The Traitors: New Blood," the civilian version, premieres Thursday, September 17, 2026, on NBC and streams the next day on Peacock. Same machine, no reality stars.

If it works with people nobody's heard of, the format is the author and the cast was never the point. Season five returns in January.
