The California DMV Won't Renew Your Car Registration at the Counter

License and ID renewals, replacement licenses and driving or vehicle records are off the counter too, unless your renewal notice says otherwise.

You're about to book a DMV appointment to renew your car registration. Don't. The California DMV says its counters don't do that job.

Registration renewal is one of four chores the agency has pulled off the counter completely, according to the DMV's appointments page. The other three are driver's license and ID card renewals, driver and vehicle records, and replacement driver's licenses. For all four, the DMV sends you somewhere else: its website, a DMV kiosk, a DMV business partner or the mail.

There's one exception, and it's on a piece of paper you may already have. A license or ID renewal can still go to the counter if your renewal notice says so, the DMV says. If the notice doesn't say it, the counter isn't your route.

  1. Find your chore on the list. Renewing a registration, renewing a license or ID, getting a driver or vehicle record, or replacing a license? Then you're done with the office before you start.
  2. Read your renewal notice. It's the only thing that can send a license or ID renewal back to the counter.
  3. Pick one of the four routes. Go online at dmv.ca.gov, use a DMV kiosk, go to a DMV business partner, or mail it in. Don't let a wasted trip eat into your deadline: the DMV's own menu has a page for paying a late registration fee.
  4. Book only if your chore isn't on the list. A first license or ID, for instance, isn't one of the four. The DMV lists new applications separately from renewals. For anything off the list, the DMV's appointments menu has two options, Schedule Appointment and Get in Line Now, plus a Locations & Hours page to check before you choose an office.
