Cyberpunk 2077 launched so buggy that the co-boss of the studio behind it still says some players may be gone for good. Now Paramount Pictures wants to turn it into a movie.

Paramount is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film with developer CD Projekt Red and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose credits include the Transformers movies and The Meg, VGC reported Thursday, citing Deadline. CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the project on X late that night, calling Paramount "a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise."

That's about all there is. Nobody has named a director, a writer, a star or a date, and CD Projekt Red's only comment to Reuters was to point back at Nowakowski's post.

Investors didn't need more. The news sent CD Projekt's shares up 3% in early trading Friday, Reuters reported, and Erste analyst Krzysztof Tkocz said Paramount's involvement should help keep fans interested until the next Cyberpunk game.

That next game is the real wait. Reuters reported that 184 developers were building a Cyberpunk sequel as of July 31, and there's still no announced release date. The original had sold 40 million copies as of July 3, and the Phantom Liberty expansion another 15 million.

The game already has movie stars. Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba play key roles in the series, which follows a mercenary named V through Night City with a chip in V's head carrying a digital copy of Johnny Silverhand, a rockstar turned terrorist.

CD Projekt has done well on screens before. The Witcher and the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners both drew big audiences on Netflix, VGC noted. The next Cyberpunk story on a screen won't be Paramount's, though: Edgerunners' second season starts streaming Oct. 20.

The launch is what still hangs over all of it. The bugs at release cost the studio goodwill. In September 2023, VGC's review of Phantom Liberty said the expansion and a 2.0 update made the game worth a second chance.

Nowakowski doesn't think the comeback is finished. "I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that's a fair thing," he said recently, in remarks VGC reported. He still hopes to win them back "if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next."

As of Thursday, whatever comes next includes a movie.
