OpenAI Puts a Word Processor Inside ChatGPT, Taking On Microsoft

A shared workspace called Space and a document tool called Pages launched at DevDay, with PowerPoint-style slides due in the coming weeks.

OpenAI put a word processor and a shared workspace inside ChatGPT on Tuesday, with a slide-deck maker close behind, moving straight onto Microsoft's turf.

OpenAI rolled out the tools at DevDay, its developer conference in San Francisco, TechCrunch reported. The awkward part is the target. OpenAI has worked closely with Microsoft from the start, and workplace software is the core of Microsoft's business.

If your day runs on Word documents and PowerPoint decks, OpenAI would now like that day to happen inside its chatbot, with AI agents working in the file next to you.

Space, where the agents live

The centerpiece is Space. It's a shared area inside ChatGPT where co-workers can work on tasks with the chatbot and with their own Dots. Dots are AI agent personas OpenAI just launched, and they can do jobs on a user's behalf.

CEO Sam Altman pitched it on stage as a drive where your pages and files sit together. "But spaces feel alive," he said, according to TechCrunch. His example: you can give a page standing orders, like checking a team channel and updating itself with whatever turns up there.

Pages, the Word rival

Pages is the companion word processor. OpenAI calls it "a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration." TechCrunch read it as OpenAI's answer to Google Docs and Microsoft Word, and the company says you can write, research, build charts, make images and lay out information in it.

That last list matters. A normal document holds what you typed. OpenAI's version is meant to be a place where software keeps working after you've closed the laptop.

Slides, the PowerPoint rival

Then there's the deck. OpenAI's collaborative slides can be made just by talking about them in ChatGPT. Once a deck exists, several workers and agents can edit it together and leave comments, the outlet reported.

The rivalry runs both ways.

Microsoft and Salesforce have spent the past year pushing out a stream of AI products, TechCrunch noted, as software companies try to keep pace by acting more like OpenAI. OpenAI is now answering by acting more like them, and the chatbot company's version of an office comes with agents built in rather than bolted on.

Space and Pages launched Tuesday. Slides isn't out yet; an OpenAI representative told TechCrunch it will reach users in the coming weeks.
