Quinton Byfield scored in overtime and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Ottawa Senators 6-5 Thursday, after giving back a 5-1 lead.

The Hockey News, in its recap on Yahoo Sports, listed the Kings at 4-6-2. It was also their first home win in four tries this season, according to Field Level Media.

Then the third period came. According to the Associated Press, Ottawa got goals from Dylan Cozens and Drake Batherson 33 seconds apart midway through the period. The AP also reported that Cozens scored again with 7:26 left to make it 5-4. Shane Pinto tied it with 1:40 to go, tipping a Batherson pass while Ottawa goalie Samuel Ersson sat on the bench for an extra skater.

The Hockey News, writing on Yahoo Sports, counted a 38-22 shot edge for the Kings and exactly one Ottawa shot in the second period, when Los Angeles scored four times. That's a rout on the stat sheet. What the shot count misses is the last 20 minutes, when Ottawa turned its chances into four goals. The Hockey News blamed defensive breakdowns and a team that stopped pushing once it was ahead.

The lead had been built fast. Tyler Kleven put Ottawa up 1-0 on a rebound in the first, and Erik Haula tied it on a power play by redirecting a Brandt Clarke shot, Field Level Media reported. In the second, Trevor Moore scored for the first time in 11 games. Mikey Anderson and Joel Armia then scored 37 seconds apart, and Artemi Panarin made it 5-1 on a 5-on-3.

That two-man advantage cost the Kings something. Ottawa forward Hayden Hodgson was ejected for boarding Clarke, according to the AP, and Clarke didn't return because of an upper-body injury. The defenseman whose shot started the Kings' scoring watched the collapse from somewhere other than the bench, and the Kings played the rest of the night a man short on the blue line.

Byfield had already set up Moore's goal with a long backhand pass. The AP said his winner was a snap shot from the high slot past Ersson, 3:37 into the extra period, with Drew Doughty earning a third helper on the night. Field Level Media noted that Brian Dumoulin, playing career game No. 800, had an assist.

The team's account on X posted "AHHHHHHH KINGS WIN," which is about the right review for a night that went from 5-1 to 5-5 in one period.

Buffalo visits Saturday as the Kings continue a seven-game homestand, The Hockey News reported on Yahoo Sports, while Ottawa heads to San Jose. That's six more home games to show whether the first 40 minutes or the last 20 were the real Kings.
