Twenty-two years after the Super Bowl halftime that gave the language "wardrobe malfunction," Janet Jackson is reportedly ready to talk about it on Justin Timberlake's show.

Timberlake has a four-part docuseries billed as a "tell-all" coming to Apple TV in December, Variety reported Monday in an exclusive built on three sources. One of them told Variety the series features Jackson discussing the 2004 incident.

Jackson's name is the reason anyone's texting about this. She headlined that halftime show, and Timberlake was her guest. At the line "Gonna have you naked by the end of this song," he grabbed her costume and exposed her right breast. As Rolling Stone recounted, she took most of the punishment: radio blacklisted her and her career stalled. He got off lightly and later came back to headline the halftime show on his own.

The reckoning arrived in 2021, after the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" reopened the file. Timberlake apologized to both women, saying, "I care for and respect these women and I know I failed," Rolling Stone reported. In the same apology he wrote that he had "benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism," Billboard reported.

He comes to this series after a quiet stretch. Apart from a guest spot at Jay-Z's Paris show last month, he's mostly stayed out of sight since his Forget Tomorrow tour wrapped in July 2025, Variety reported. That same month he disclosed a Lyme disease diagnosis, writing that it can be "relentlessly debilitating." There's been no album since 2024, though he turned up on "House Music," a Quavo track out in early October, according to Billboard.

So the real question is who's doing the telling. Fisher Stevens directs, and he isn't a stranger: he made "Palmer," the 2021 Apple film Timberlake starred in, and Netflix's 2023 docuseries "Beckham," the A.V. Club noted. A second Variety source said Timberlake also takes up recent comments from Britney Spears, his former girlfriend.

Stereogum's read is that Timberlake appears to have creative control, which makes the interesting part how much blame he takes on camera.

Beyond those sources, nobody's saying. Reps for Timberlake, Jackson and Apple had no comment or didn't answer Variety's repeated requests, and they hadn't immediately responded to Rolling Stone either. The A.V. Club noted that no release date has been announced.

For 22 years the story of that night was mostly told about Janet Jackson. If Variety's source is right, she tells it herself in December, in a series with his name on the front.
