Black Restaurant Week Is On in L.A. The Meals Aren't Discounted.

Harold & Belle's, Dulan's on Crenshaw and Bludso's BBQ are among the Los Angeles restaurants on the list.

Black Restaurant Week's ninth annual Los Angeles run started September 18 and ends September 27, and it doesn't come with discounted meals. The dates and the local lineup were published by Eater LA, in a column by editor Mona Holmes. The full roster lives on the organizers' own site; Eater's is a short list.

So the arithmetic for a diner is plain: you'll pay whatever the menu says you'll pay. There's no three-course card at a set price the way there is during the semiannual Dine L.A., which is the comparison most people reach for when they hear the words restaurant week. What the event moves is attention, not the check.

That's the design, going back to the start. Black Restaurant Week began in Houston in 2016 as a way to get eyes on Black-owned food businesses that can't cover advertising, marketing or public relations on their own, Eater LA reported. The Los Angeles edition extends the same framing to Black, African and Caribbean cooking across the region.

Four of the places Eater LA named:

• 1010 Wine and Events, in Inglewood
• Obet & Del's Coffee, in East Hollywood
• Bludso's BBQ, from a James Beard Foundation Award-winning chef
• Blaqhaus Noho

And the four that round out that short list:

• Joyce
• Harold & Belle's
• the Wood BBQ Sports Bar
• Dulan's on Crenshaw

Holmes wrote that she's headed to Gritz N' Wafflez, a daytime brunch room in Koreatown. She's going for chef Jurni Rayne's fried deviled eggs, collard greens dip and waffles, plus a drink Rayne calls the Keke Palmer, her version of an Arnold Palmer. That's Holmes's pick, dated to her September 18 column, not a verdict from here.

One more Inglewood note from the same column, though it isn't tied to the week: Two Hommés, which cooks West African food through a California filter, added weekday midday service. The kitchen runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The Los Angeles run closes September 27.
