May brought Yoko Ono's first-ever solo museum exhibition in Southern California: a seven-decade showcase of the artist and activist's work at The Broad, per LAmag's May guide. The same month packed in the Netflix Is a Joke festival and the Hammer Museum's annual gala honoring Darren Star and the artist Betye Saar.
That it took until 2026 for a SoCal institution to give Ono a solo show is its own commentary on how slowly the canon moves. The Broad doing it — a museum that didn't exist a dozen years ago — is the fitting part.
