You want to swim in October, so you look up the city's year-round pools, and the list gives you 25. Twelve of them have closure notices on their own pages.

We read all 25 pages on the Department of Recreation and Parks' year-round listing on October 2, opened the fall brochures that two of them hide their hours inside, and sorted the list four ways. Eleven pools are open. Twelve are shut for repairs, nine of those since September. Two post no current hours anywhere at all. And two of the eleven that are open close on October 23 for six weeks.

The city can't agree with itself on how many there are

The aquatics home page says the division "operates 28 seasonal swimming pools, 26 year-round swimming pools and 3 camp pools." Scroll to the POOL NOTES at the bottom of that same page and it says "Twenty four pools operate year round" and "Twenty Seven (summer) pools are open during the Summer Season." The year-round listing the page links to names 25. The summer listing names 28.

You're wondering which number to trust. For planning a swim, none of them — trust the individual pool's page, because that's the one a facility manager edits when the water actually goes off.

The home page is worth one more look, because it tells you how old some of this is. The banner under the headline still advertises an extended weekend season dated "September 7 - 29, 2019." The link labelled "City Swimming Pool Report" opens the department's pools report from 2004. The two listings also leak into each other: Woodland Hills and Yosemite sit on the year-round list at summer web addresses, and Hansen Dam Aquatic Center sits on the summer list at a year-round address, where its swim lake is posted "Closed until May 2027."

The nine that are open and post their hours

Algin Sutton Pool — 8800 S. Hoover St., South Los Angeles, (323) 789-2826. Closed Mondays; Tuesday through Friday noon to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m., with lap and recreational swimmers sharing the same sessions. That schedule is posted only through October 23, when the pool closes for maintenance with December 3 projected. It's also closed October 12, November 11, November 26 and 27, December 25 and January 1.

Banning Pool — 1450 N. Avalon Blvd., Wilmington, (310) 548-7420. Public hours run September 13 to December 19: recreational and lap swim both Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 5:55 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4:55 p.m. The lap lanes are 20 yards, which the page states and which matters if you count laps. Closed November 11, November 26 and 27, December 24 and 25, and December 31 and January 1.

Celes King III Pool — 5001 Obama Blvd., (213) 847-3406. It opens earlier than most. Under the September 13 to November 19 schedule, lap swim runs Tuesday through Friday 6 to 9:30 a.m., Monday through Friday 3:30 to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to noon, and weekends 1 to 4:50 p.m., with limited lanes in every session. Recreational swim is shallow water only. The diving board is open weekends, 1 to 4:50 p.m. Closed October 12 and November 11.

Expo Center — LA84 Foundation / John C. Argue Swim Stadium — 3980 Bill Robertson Lane, (213) 763-0125. Two pools here and only one of them is working: the family pool is open, the competition pool is closed for maintenance. Fall hours run September 8 to November 13, with lap swim Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on limited lanes and again 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday 1 to 4:30 p.m.; recreational swim is Monday through Friday 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday 1 to 4:30 p.m. A maintenance closure follows from November 13 to December 25.

Hubert H. Humphrey Pool — 12560 Filmore St., Pacoima, (818) 896-0067. Hours effective August 13: closed Mondays, Tuesday through Friday 3:30 to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The page carries no closure notice and no holiday list, so the citywide holiday closures below are the ones to assume.

Richard Alatorre Pool — 4721 Klamath St., East Los Angeles, (323) 276-3042. Open seven days: Monday 3:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 12:30 to 8 p.m., weekends 1 to 5 p.m. Annual maintenance shuts it from October 23 through December 3, and the page says fall lesson registration for sessions two and three is cancelled because of it. Also closed October 12, November 11, November 26 and 27, December 24 and 25, and December 31 and January 1.

Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Pool — 14201 Huston St., (818) 783-6721. Nothing on the list runs later, which makes it the one to try if you work days: lap swim only Tuesday through Friday 6 to 10 a.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon, then recreational and lap together Monday noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday noon to 9 p.m., and weekends noon to 5 p.m. Closed October 12, November 11, November 13, November 27, December 25 and January 1.

Venice High School Indoor Pool — 2490 Walgrove Ave., (310) 575-8260. Indoors, and open September 13 through December 18: recreational swim Monday 4:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 4:30 to 6 p.m., weekends 1 to 5 p.m. Lap swim and aqua jogging get Monday 5:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 7 to 8 p.m., and weekends 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m., limited lanes throughout. Maintenance starts December 18 and the page gives no end date. Closed October 12, November 11, November 26 and 27.

Yosemite Pool — 1840 Yosemite Dr., (323) 226-1668. Monday through Friday 4:30 to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m., no closure notice, no holiday list. This is one of the two pools the year-round listing files under a summer web address, so a search that lands you on the summer page hasn't lied to you.

The two that are open, if you open the PDF

Glassell Pool — 3704 Verdugo Rd., (323) 226-1670. All the page says is "Glassell pool is now Open, Heated." The hours are real and they're in the fall brochure, effective September 7 to December 31: lap swim Tuesday through Friday 6 to 8 a.m., then lap and recreational together Monday 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday noon to 8 p.m., and weekends 1 to 5 p.m. Closed October 12, November 11, November 26 and 27.

LACES Aquatic Center — 5931 W. 18th St., (323) 933-8345. The hours on the page stop on September 6, nearly four weeks before we read it. The fall and winter brochure runs September 12 to December 31: recreational swim Wednesday and Friday 6 to 9 p.m. and weekends 1 to 5 p.m.; lap swim, 14 and over only, Tuesday and Thursday 7 to 9 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The twelve that are closed, and what each one says about coming back

Cleveland Aquatic Center — 8120 Vanalden Ave., Reseda, (818) 756-9798. Closed for roughly three months from September 8, hoping to reopen by early December. It's the only one of the 25 whose page lists a therapeutic pool — 13 yards, shallow, heated to 89 degrees, availability by phone — so if that's what you need, the wait is the whole autumn. The page asks patrons to email it with the subject line "Mailing List" for reopening news.

Echo Park Indoor Pool — 1419 Colton St., (213) 481-2640. Closed for maintenance since September 16, projected to reopen October 29.

Eleanor Green Roberts Aquatic Center — 4526 W. Pico Blvd., (323) 936-8483. Closed for maintenance since September 8, with a projected reopening the page prints as "October 20, 2016." The recreational and lap hours still sitting below that notice cover May 31 to September 12.

Fremont Pool — 7630 S. Towne Ave., (213) 847-3401. "Fremont Pool will be CLOSED until FURTHER NOTICE." No start date, no projection, and the only program still listed is CPR for lifeguards.

Hey Rookie Pool — 3351 S. Gaffey St., San Pedro, (310) 521-9017. Closed for "6 weeks of scheduled maintenance starting September 9th." The page gives the start and the length but never the date, and six weeks from September 9 lands around October 21 — our arithmetic, not the city's, so call first.

Hollywood Pool — 1122 Cole Ave., (323) 460-7058. A six-week closure from September 25 to November 5, with November 6 projected. It also closes Mondays from September 14 onward, and on November 11, November 26 and 27, and December 25.

Lincoln Park Pool — 3501 Valley Blvd., (323) 276-7174. This is the page most likely to waste your afternoon. It posts a full week of hours — Monday through Friday noon to 7 p.m., weekends 1 to 5 p.m. — and then, underneath them, a notice that the pool has been closed for maintenance since September 25 with November 6 projected. The notice is the current fact; the hours are what you get back.

Peck Park Pool — 560 N. Western Ave., San Pedro, (310) 548-2434. "POOL CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE" is the entire body of the page. No hours, no programs, no date, not even a start.

Van Ness Aquatic Center — 5720 2nd Ave., (323) 218-7161. Closed since September 8, carrying the same "October 20, 2016" projection as Eleanor Green Roberts — the two notices are the same sentence. The line after it reads "Starting October 21, our hours of operation are," which is the useful part: weekends 1 to 5 p.m., Monday 2:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Friday noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.

Verdugo Hills Pool — 10654 Irma Ave., Tujunga, (818) 446-7028. Closed since August 27 with October 8 projected, which makes it the first one back. Its hours when it returns are Monday through Friday noon to 7 p.m. and weekends 1 to 5 p.m.

Westwood Pool — 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd., (310) 478-7019. Maintenance closure effective September 25 to November 6. The page's actual hours live in a fall brochure attachment rather than on the page.

Woodland Hills Pool — 5858 Shoup Ave., (818) 704-1509. Closed for maintenance from September 25 with the reopening given as TBD rather than a date or an "until further notice" — the only pool on the list that says that. The heading above its hours still reads "Summer 2026," and it's the second of the two pools the year-round listing files under a summer address.

The two that don't say

Granada Hills Pool — 16730 Chatsworth St., (818) 360-7107. No hours, no closure notice, and the brochure the page links is the summer 2026 edition, whose team practice dates ended August 7. Nothing on the page says whether there's water in it. The number is the only way to find out.

Roosevelt Pool — 456 S. Mathews St., (213) 485-7391. No hours, no closure notice, no holiday list. The one document attached to the page is a flyer saved as a flat image with no selectable text, so a screen reader and a search engine get nothing from it; the file is named as a closure notice dated 9-18-25, and by its own embedded timestamp it was made in September 2025.

What it costs, and the rule that stops people at the window

Admission is the same at all 25 and it is cheap: infants up to two get in free, ages three to 17 pay $1, adults 18 to 49 pay $4, anyone 50 and over pays $1, and people with disabilities pay $1 at any age. The part that strands people is the payment: it's cash only, at every pool, every session.

Only the year-round pools sell multi-entry passes, which is a real reason to prefer one. There are two, both good for 30 entries: an adult lap swim pass at $88 and a pass for youth, adults 50 and over, and people with disabilities at $25. We ran both against the door price. The $88 pass works out to $2.93 a swim against $4 at the window — it costs exactly what 22 drop-ins cost, so it starts earning on the 23rd visit. The $25 pass is the weaker of the two: 30 single dollars would be $30, so the most it can ever save is $5, and only if you use every entry.

Glassell's brochure prices two things the citywide page doesn't mention: a swim diaper or life jacket is $2, and a lounge chair is $3 for the day, except the first ten chairs, which are marked with blue tape and free to whoever reaches them.

Two entry rules turn families away at the gate often enough to be worth knowing before you park. A child under seven needs an adult in the water with them, one adult per child, not one adult per family. A child under four needs an approved swim diaper or plastic pants with elastic at the waist and legs; a regular diaper is refused. The posted attire rules rule out cut-offs, bike shorts, basketball shorts and street shorts, and all white T-shirts and rash guards; men's trunks need a liner and a drawstring, and board shorts are fine.

Two more things that are easy to miss. The city publishes a live map of which aquatic facilities and splash pads are operational, which is the fastest check on a given morning, though it needs JavaScript and we couldn't read it without a browser. And this list is the City of Los Angeles only: L.A. County Parks runs its own aquatics system, with its own pools, its own year-round schedule and a separate registration at (626) 681-3071 — so a county pool near you won't appear on any page above. The Globe has ranked the seven indoor ones separately, if roof and heat are what you're after.

Four dates are worth putting in a phone. Verdugo Hills is projected back October 8 and Echo Park on October 29. And on October 23, Algin Sutton and Richard Alatorre both close for six weeks, through December 3.

How this was checked. Every address, phone number, hour, closure notice, fee and rule on this page was read off the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks' own aquatics pages and fall brochures on October 2, 2026. Closures change without notice, and the individual pool's page is the one that gets edited; this page will be re-verified and updated in place.
