From the Editor: Why I'm Starting a Paper in 2026

Everyone I told about this project had the same reaction, which was a kind of polite wince. A publication? Now? The wince is fair. Starting a paper in 2026 is like opening a video store or learning to repair typewriters — an act of either faith or stubbornness, and I've never been great at telling those two apart.

Here's my case anyway. Los Angeles is the most written-about city in the world and somehow still one of the least understood. The national press parachutes in for awards season and fire season and leaves before anyone's learned to pronounce Los Feliz. The local coverage that survives is heroic but stretched thin, triaging a county of ten million people. What falls through the gap is the middle register of city life — not breaking news, not think pieces, but the slow, specific texture of actually living here.

That's the beat. The LA Globe reads everyone covering this city — and credits them, loudly — then adds the thing a wire service can't: a consistent point of view, accountable to its readers. Sustained attention to one city, at whatever length the attention requires.
