Vanguard Agreed to Buy Altruist, the Culver City Firm Holding Advisers' Accounts
The two firms didn’t disclose terms; Altruist keeps its brand, leadership and operating model as a standalone business.

Vanguard has agreed to buy Altruist, the Culver City firm whose software independent financial advisers use to hold client accounts. The two companies announced the agreement on August 26, 2026. Neither disclosed a price, the Los Angeles Business Journal reported on August 31. The Wall Street Journal put the transaction at roughly $4 billion, citing people familiar with it, the Business Journal said.
The people with something riding on this are the registered investment advisers who keep client accounts on Altruist's system. Behind those accounts sit households. Vanguard says Altruist will run as a standalone business once the deal closes, keeping its brand, its leadership and the way it operates.
No closing date has been announced.
Vanguard Chief Executive Salim Ramji pitched the purchase as an adviser play. More investors in the firm's funds are working with financial advisers, he told the Business Journal. He said Vanguard sees “a significant opportunity to build on the strengths of two highly complementary organizations.”
What Vanguard is buying is unusual for this corner of finance. Altruist runs a self-clearing brokerage. That brokerage is bolted to the software an advisory practice touches every day, covering account opening, trading, portfolio management, billing and client reporting, according to the Business Journal's account of the announcement.
That combination is the point. It puts Vanguard, a firm most people know for index funds, into the custody business. The incumbents there are Charles Schwab and Fidelity Investments, the outlet reported.
This isn't a cold introduction. Vanguard first put money into Altruist in 2020, the Business Journal reported. The stated aim then was adding competition to the market serving registered investment advisers.
Six years later it's buying the whole company. Until the deal closes, the accounts sit where they've been sitting — on a Culver City platform Vanguard has already owned a piece of since 2020.
