The Victorian, the Santa Monica house that served brunch by day and ran DJs on three floors at night, is closing after 20 years.

The venue announced it on Instagram on Oct. 5, and its yearly Halloween party will be the last weekend, the Santa Monica Daily Press reported. That leaves four weekends of dancing. The post didn't give a reason, and it didn't say what happens to the house, which the City of Santa Monica owns.

For two decades the place lived two lives. In the daytime it was a restaurant and a spot people rented for weddings and parties. On weekend nights, DJs and bands played the basement, the ground floor and the upstairs, and Salsa Thursday ran for years. The Santa Monica Mirror adds that the kitchen leaned Mediterranean on an American menu, and that the building sits a block from the beach.

The goodbye post thanked everyone who'd danced, drunk, brought friends or met somebody under that roof. "You made The Vic what it was," the announcement said, according to the Daily Press.

The house is at 2640 Main St., in Heritage Square, and a different future for it has been on paper since spring. In March, a City Council agenda item tied to a lease extension described turning the Victorian into "a family-based recreation, events, and wellness facility for members," the Ocean Park Association's neighborhood newsletter reported. The newsletter said a city staff report included renderings of a remodel with a pool and wellness features.

The same newsletter said the people behind the Victorian already operate Calamigos Ranch, in the Malibu hills, and described the plan as a beach version of it. That's a members-only future for a house that's been open to anyone with a cover charge and a Thursday night free. The farewell post didn't mention it.

The last weekend is the Halloween party. "Let's make the last ones count," the post told regulars, the Mirror reported.
