The company that will own both Paramount and Warner Bros. is going to be called Skydance, named for the studio David Ellison started 20 years ago.

Ellison announced it in a post on X on Friday. Once Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery finish combining, Skydance becomes the corporate name on top, and Paramount and Warner Bros. keep going underneath it as sub-brands, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Ellison pitched the choice as a way to keep the famous names out front. He wrote on X that he wanted "a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own," while letting Paramount, Warner Bros. and the company's other brands stay in the spotlight.

In practice, the logos stay on the movies and shows, while the name on the corporate parent is the one Ellison brought with him. The combined company won't carry Warner Bros. Discovery's name, and it won't carry Paramount's either.

Ellison's post didn't say when the two companies expect to finish combining, and no closing date has been disclosed.

The new name is the latest turn in a merger the Globe has covered since September:

  • Sept. 2: The Globe reported a county estimate that put 4,500 jobs at risk from the merger.
  • Sept. 21: The Globe reported the terms of a settlement involving BET, which a judge went on to approve.
  • Oct. 2: Ellison named the combined company Skydance in his post on X.

Warner Bros. keeps its place in the spotlight. Its film chiefs don't: Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are leaving, Variety and TheWrap reported.
