Nintendo Says No New Switch 2 Price Hike Is Planned as Sales Fall

Nintendo's Switch 2 sales fell about 37% to 6.49 million from April to September, still ahead of the original Switch's pace.

Nintendo sold 6.49 million Switch 2 consoles from April through September. In the same six months a year earlier, it sold 10.36 million. That's a drop of about 37%, and it landed in the company's results Thursday alongside word that Nintendo isn't considering another price increase.

The last one is still fresh. On Sept. 1, Nintendo of America raised the U.S. list price from $449.99 to $499.99, citing market conditions it expects to last for the medium to long term. IGN tied the increase to the memory-chip squeeze that has also pushed Microsoft and Sony to charge more. President Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo has enough memory to meet its forecast of 16.5 million Switch 2s for the fiscal year ending in March, and isn't weighing further price changes, IGN reported, citing Reuters.

The quarter that ended with the price increase was also the slowest. Nintendo moved 2.67 million Switch 2s from July through September, CNBC reported, according to IGN. That's down 41% from a year earlier and down from 3.82 million in the April-to-June quarter.

None of that adds up to a collapse. Video Games Chronicle reported that the Switch 2 is still comfortably ahead of the original Switch. Nintendo's own count puts the Switch 2 at 26.35 million consoles sold through Sept. 30. IGN noted that keeps it ahead of the first Switch over the same six quarters, even with a record-breaking launch year to measure against.

The bigger rival may be the old machine's library. In the July-to-September quarter, original Switch software sold 31.92 million units, about twice the 15.04 million sold for Switch 2, according to games.gg's breakdown of the results. Switch 2 software is growing, up 18.8% to 24.49 million for the half, but players are still buying plenty of games for the console they already own.

That's why the release calendar matters. "Nintendo's only real blockbuster this fiscal year is the Ocarina Of Time remake," Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC, adding that "only hits help" sell hardware now. The remake came out Thursday, and Nintendo shares jumped 8.13% the same day, IGN reported.

Here's the job ahead. To reach 16.5 million, Nintendo has to sell about 10 million more Switch 2s by the end of March, which is more than it sold in the past six months. That push started the same day Link came back.
