Alexandra Cabot has faked her own death, vanished into witness protection and walked away from the district attorney's office. She keeps coming back to "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" anyway.

Stephanie March will play the prosecutor again in the ninth episode of the NBC drama's 28th season, Deadline reported Friday. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter had the news the same afternoon. It'll be her first time on the show in eight years, since Season 19's "Sunk Cost Fallacy," and Season 28 will be the sixth season since her 2003 exit to bring her back.

When she'll show up depends on who's asking. The Hollywood Reporter said NBC is keeping the plot under wraps and hadn't set an airdate, while TheWrap reported that the episode is scheduled for Dec. 3.

She isn't the only alum on this season's call sheet. Christopher Meloni is returning as Elliot Stabler for the show's 600th episode, which makes March the season's second former regular to come back, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The homecomings land in a season that started strong: the Oct. 8 premiere was up 21% from last season among viewers ages 18 to 49, TheWrap reported.

Her last visit turned the character around. In the 2018 episode, Cabot had left the DA's office and was helping abuse victims get away from their abusers, which put her in the middle of a missing-persons case run by Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), The Hollywood Reporter reported. TV Insider says Hargitay helped make that return happen, and it quoted March telling Today in 2018 that Hargitay texted her "Would you be interested in coming back?" before she'd even read the script.

Getting to that point took a lot of exits. March joined the regular cast in Season 2, in 2000, and stayed until Season 5, in 2003, when Cabot faked her death and went into witness protection, Variety reported. She was back the very next season, then in Seasons 10, 11 and 13, with a recurring part in those last three, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In 2006, she even took Cabot to her own show. The spinoff "Conviction" had her mentoring a crew of young prosecutors, and it didn't make it past one season, TheWrap noted.

Nobody quite agrees on the tally. Variety and TheWrap say March has played Cabot in more than 100 episodes, while TV Insider reported that the Season 28 episode will be her 98th on "SVU."

Back in 2018, March explained why she keeps coming back. "There's no downside to play a role I've always loved," she told Today, in an interview TV Insider quoted.
