Spotify's New Audi App Runs Without Your Phone or CarPlay
It's a free download from Audi's own app store for model-year 2026 cars, but a Spotify account is still required.

Starting Wednesday, Spotify runs straight off the dashboard in some new Audis. There's no phone, no Bluetooth pairing and no aux cable involved.
The Verge reported Wednesday that it's Spotify's first fully native car app, and the real change is who controls the screen. Spotify's older app for Google's Android Automotive system was a headless setup: Spotify sent over the songs and playlists, and Google's templates decided what the display looked like. The new one builds its whole interface itself. In an interview with The Verge, Jonathan Tarlton, who runs automotive business development at Spotify, said the company is now "drawing all the pixels."
Here's who gets it, according to Audi's own announcement. It covers model-year 2026 Audis built on the company's newer electric and gas platforms: the A6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, A5, Q5 and A6. Audi says the Q7 and Q9 SUVs are included too. The app is free, and for now the Audi Application Store is the only place to download it. It still needs a Spotify account, and Audi says the cost depends on the market and the plan. The rollout spans 47 Audi markets, North America among them.
Spotify's target is the phone in your cupholder. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which mirror a phone onto the car's screen, are still how many drivers listen. The car is a big room for Spotify: by The Verge's count, 77% of Premium subscribers and 34% of all monthly users listen there. Tarlton told The Verge the company hasn't stopped putting money and work into those phone systems. Still, he pitched the native app as a fix for their delays, like the wait during "a cold start in the morning."
A lot of the pitch is aimed at the people who aren't driving. A QR code on the dashboard screen lets a passenger join a Spotify Jam from their own phone and drop songs into the shared queue. Audis with a front passenger display can show lyrics and video there while the car is moving. "I'm excited that we can bring joy to the cabin again," Tarlton told The Verge.
The driver gets less. Audi says that once the car is moving, lyrics and music videos disappear from the center screen and sign-in and settings are locked. Voice commands through Hey Audi and Spotify DJ keep working. Once the car is parked, the full app comes back to the main display.
Spotify's bigger bet is on the plumbing, not on Audi. Tarlton told The Verge that Spotify built one standard Android Automotive app so it wouldn't need a custom version for every carmaker. That app can be distributed through Google Play or an automaker's own store, and he said the top goal was "to prevent fragmentation" across the industry. For now, though, Audi says the one place to get it is Audi's store.
