Rams Owner Stan Kroenke Agreed to Buy the Angels

Arte Moreno's family is selling after 23 years, and the sale needs Major League Baseball's approval before it closes.

Stan Kroenke, who owns the Rams and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, has agreed to buy the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno and his family. KTLA reported the agreement. The two sides expect it to close in the first quarter of 2027. Major League Baseball has to approve it first, along with what the announcement called customary closing conditions.

For Anaheim, it's the first change of hands at the ballpark since 2003. That's the year Moreno bought the club from the Walt Disney Company for $180 million, KTLA reported. He became the first Mexican-American owner of a major U.S. sports franchise.

Twenty-three seasons under one family. The last word belongs to the league office.

Nobody has put a price on the Angels. The deal is expected to break a Major League Baseball record by topping the $3.9 billion San Diego Padres sale, the Los Angeles Times reported, per KTLA's account. Until a figure is announced or filed, that comparison is the only number attached to the sale.

Moreno, the departing owner, framed the handoff as a succession rather than an exit under pressure. His family considered it an honor to run the team for 23 years, he said in the announcement. He called the buyer, citing its experience and its record, "the best next owner for the franchise."

KSE is Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. What it already runs is the part that makes this an unusual buy for a Southern California club. Per the news release cited by KTLA, the company holds the Rams, the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche, the Colorado Rapids, the Colorado Mammoth and Arsenal FC, and it owns and operates SoFi Stadium, Ball Arena, DICK'S Sporting Goods Park, Altitude Sports & Entertainment and Outdoor Sportsman Group.

Read that list next to a map. One company would operate the football stadium in Inglewood and own the baseball team in Anaheim. The buildings in both cities sit on agreements the two city halls keep on file.

What happens next isn't a game result. Major League Baseball has to sign off. The closing window the parties gave is the first three months of 2027 — more than a year of paperwork before anyone's business card changes.
