Netflix Is Testing an AI Tab That Picks Shows by Your Mood
AI Discover sorts titles by mood or spare time, and it's the first viewer-facing Netflix feature the company has branded as AI.

Click the new Discover button on Netflix's TV app and a line pops up before anything else: “Give me a moment while I find your next obsession,” Variety reported.
That button opens AI Discover, a tab Netflix announced Tuesday. TechCrunch reported that it's rolling out first to U.S. subscribers on supported TVs who watch Netflix in English, and Netflix says more people will get it in the coming weeks. Viewing per subscriber has dropped recently, and Variety reported that Netflix hopes the feature will raise total watch time, especially in the U.S.
It's a menu, not a chat window. Viewers pick from themes, and each one opens on a clip from a Netflix title. Some are moods like “Scare Me.” Some are as narrow as “Royal Court Intrigue.” A pick brings up matching titles plus more specific themes to dig into, and a “Something Different” option deals a fresh set. Variety reported that it won't appear on kids' profiles.
Every title also gets a “Tune Your Recommendations” button next to Play and My List, for keeping a suggestion or getting rid of it. Netflix's blog post, as Variety quoted it, spells out the promise: “Tell us a recommendation isn't for you, and we'll remember it in AI Discover, so it won't keep turning up.” As Netflix wrote it, that promise covers the tab, not the whole app.
Under the hood, Netflix says the tab runs on a new “intelligence layer” that reacts to what viewers tell it in real time and keeps learning. That's the company's description. Netflix has used machine learning to tailor its rows for years, Variety noted, but this is the first feature viewers use that Netflix has labeled as AI.
Until now, most of Netflix's AI work has happened behind the camera. By Netflix's own count in July, roughly 300 titles across its catalog had leaned on generative AI somewhere in the making. And Ben Affleck's InterPositive, which Netflix says builds AI tools filmmakers can use across a production, cost the streamer $587 million this spring, Variety reported. The home screen is where the label shows up for the first time.
Netflix calls the tab its “test kitchen.” The company says testers' feedback will decide which ideas it keeps or reworks before any of them reach the main Netflix experience. For now, the next-obsession pitch is one of the experiments.
