Microsoft's Nvidia-Powered Surface Laptop Ultra Ships Oct. 16 for $2,600
Preorders are open for the first Surface on Nvidia's RTX Spark chip, with 24GB of memory and 512GB of storage to start.

Microsoft's first laptop built on Nvidia's new RTX Spark chip, the 15-inch Surface Laptop Ultra, goes on sale Oct. 16 starting at $2,599.99. Preorders are already open.
The price is on Microsoft's store page, next to a preorder button. The ship date came out of the company's Windows and Surface keynote in San Francisco on Wednesday, The Verge reported. The Verge calls the machine Microsoft's MacBook Pro competitor, and it reported that the first wave of RTX Spark laptops is aimed at Apple's high-end models, with prices running as high as $7,000.
The $2,599.99 model is the bottom rung. It comes with 24GB of memory and 512GB of storage. Microsoft says the chip goes up to a 20-core Nvidia Grace CPU and 128GB of unified memory, and storage goes up to 2TB. The pitch from Microsoft and Nvidia is premium work: creative apps, games and AI models that run on the laptop instead of in the cloud.
The screen is an HDR touchscreen rated at 2,000 nits at peak. Microsoft's own fine print says that figure was measured on a 10 percent patch of HDR content, and that sustained brightness is lower. The laptop weighs under 4.5 pounds, it's less than 18 millimeters thick, and the sides carry three USB-C ports, a USB-A port, HDMI, an SD card reader and a headphone jack.
One of those USB-C ports does double duty. Microsoft calls it Magnetic Connect: the charging cable attaches by magnet to the right-side port, and Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri said onstage that you can "bring the connector close, and it snaps right into place," according to The Verge. It takes the place of Surface Connect, the proprietary magnetic plug Microsoft dropped from its smaller Surface devices last year.
The new cable is still Microsoft's own design, The Verge noted, but the port it attaches to works like any other USB-C port for video and data. Microsoft's page bills it as the first built-in magnetic USB-C charging port, which is the company's claim.
For now, the battery numbers are Microsoft's too. Its footnotes say the battery tests ran in September on preproduction units with 64GB of memory, not the 24GB base model that a $2,599.99 order gets.
The same chip also went into a box that costs more than twice as much. Microsoft opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a flat aluminum mini PC for developers, at $5,999, with shipping set for November. It has 128GB of unified memory, and Microsoft is pitching it for running AI models larger than 120 billion parameters, The Verge reported. That's more than Nvidia charged for its own DGX Spark mini PC last year, at a time when RAM shortages are pushing PC prices up.
The software pitch came at the same keynote. Microsoft showed Copilot getting access to the files on a PC and the ability to take actions across Windows, under a banner it calls Hybrid Intelligence, which mixes local and cloud AI models. In a video demo, Copilot executive Jacob Andreou told the Autopilot tool that his accountant needed documents for his taxes. The Verge reported that the tool found the files, renamed them, zipped them and drafted the email.
Davuluri also said Meta's Muse AI agent is getting a native Windows app, but The Verge reported he didn't say when. Microsoft's trade-in offer pays extra cash back on the laptop through Nov. 23, and the amount varies. It's only available through Microsoft's online store in the U.S. and Canada.
The laptop is due Oct. 16. The accountant demo, for now, is still a video.
