Meta Will End Quest 2 and Quest Pro Feature Updates by March
Horizon OS 2.13 is the last release for both headsets, and quarterly security patches stop at the end of 2027, Meta says.

The Quest 2, the cheap headset that put VR in millions of living rooms, has one big software update left.
Meta said Monday that Horizon OS 2.13 will be the final operating system release for the Quest 2 and the Quest Pro, The Verge reported. The update starts rolling out in January and should reach every one of those headsets by March, according to UploadVR. Meta now calls the Quest 3 and 3S "the baseline for Meta VR gamers," The Verge reported, and the older pair moves to maintenance only.
Meta is pulling apart two kinds of updates that usually travel together. A feature update brings new menus, tricks and developer tools. A security patch just keeps the existing system safe. The Quest 2 and Quest Pro lose the first in March and keep the second until the end of 2027, and UploadVR reported that Meta won't even test its new releases on the old headsets.
Run the dates and each headset's clock looks different. The Quest 2, out since October 2020, gets roughly six and a half years of feature updates, going by UploadVR's dates. The Quest Pro launched in October 2022 at $1,500, lost $500 off its price four months in, and gets about four and a half.
The math is toughest for anyone shopping secondhand. A used Quest 2 bought today has about 14 months of security patches left. The Quest 3S, which UploadVR says pairs the Quest 3's chip with the Quest 2's lenses and displays, launched at the same $300.
Meta has run this play once before, on the original Quest. That headset's OS updates stopped with v50 in February 2023, new app submissions closed in May 2024, and security fixes ended that August, UploadVR reported. From January 2025, no app update was allowed to carry first-generation Quest support.
Several games on that first Quest gradually stopped working, heise reported. The German outlet argues the Quest 2 may age more gently, since an estimated 20 million-plus units sold gives studios a reason to keep supporting it.
Here's what changes for a Quest 2 or Quest Pro on a shelf or in a closet, in order:
- January to March: Horizon OS 2.13 rolls out in stages and reaches all Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets by March, UploadVR reported. Any feature, capability or developer tool Meta releases after that goes only to the Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer hardware.
- After March, your library stays: Meta says games and apps you already own keep working, and owners can still browse, buy and download from the store, per UploadVR. Multiplayer with Quest 3 and 3S players keeps working where a game supports cross-play, and Quest Link for playing PC VR games stays supported, heise reported.
- Through the end of 2027: Meta plans to ship security patches every quarter, plus fixes for critical bugs, UploadVR reported. After that, Meta says, the headsets get none.
- December 2027: It's the last month developers can submit brand-new apps for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, heise reported. After that, the store only takes updates to apps already there, and a new game can still launch on the Quest 3 family but won't be offered on the older headsets, tbreak reported.
- Any time before then: A studio can freeze a final build for the old headsets or stop selling a game on them, according to UploadVR. If dropping support would cut owners off from content they paid for or from services a game needs, Meta's rules require at least 180 days' notice.
- Still open: Meta hasn't set an end date for updates to existing Quest 2 apps, tbreak reported.
The new features are headed somewhere specific. Meta VR Glasses, due in spring for $1,300, run the same OS and developer kits as the Quest 3 line, The Verge and UploadVR reported. Meta's own post says millions of people still play on the Quest 2 and Quest Pro. Come March, they'll be playing on software that's done learning new tricks.
