La Shawn Ford and the Democrat of Tomorrow
La Shawn Ford is a shoo-in for Illinois' 7th District as Danny Davis retires after 30 years in Congress. Here are Ford's political highlights.

After 30 long years in the US House of Representatives, Danny Davis is retiring. Illinois’ 7th Congressional District will finally get a change.
La Shawn Ford is next in line for Davis’ seat. Ford is not new to politics; he has been a state representative in Illinois since ‘07.
Ford is what you’d call a shoo-in. Illinois’ 7th is a Chicago-based district, and for Party Democrats, the general election is nearly a foregone conclusion. Unless something drastic happens, Ford will win in November. He beat out 12 other candidates in the primary. That was his real battle.
Ford is a Chicago man. He was born and raised in Chicago, taught public school and dealt in real estate in Chicago, and spent 20 years practicing Chicago politics. He’s the retiring Congressman’s chosen successor. It is a passing of the torch.
This leads to the central question of the Illinois 7th district race: not who will win, but what will Ford do when he’s in office? Will he toe the line for the Democrats? Carve out some unique policy? Become a puppet of special interests? Be the change America needs?
Here’s a bit of Ford’s platform:
Economics
Ford’s economic rhetoric is similar to many 2026 Democrats: Close tax loopholes and lower taxes on working people and small businesses while expanding social programs. He also backs indexing the federal minimum wage to inflation. Ford’s national economic policy is not 100% clear at this point, but one thing is certain: Crypto bros put money against him. Super PAC Fairshake spent $2.5 million on negative ads targeting Ford specifically.
Healthcare
Healthcare is big in Ford’s platform. And his plan is pretty standard for a 2026 Democrat. He wants to beef up the current system by expanding the Affordable Care Act, strengthen Medicare and Medicaid, cap essential medicine prices, introduce true price transparency, and invest more federal money in neighborhood health centers.
His healthcare plan is not the full rebuild that some Democrats are calling for.
Social Issues
Like with healthcare, on social Issues, Ford largely fits the Democrat bill.
Ford sponsored the African American Employment Plan to increase Black employment and promotion in state government and has worked to reduce barriers to employment for people with criminal records.
Ford voted to legalize gay marriage in 2013. He has also voiced support for inclusive education and transgender healthcare.
Social issues have been a major focus of Ford’s career thus far.
Public Safety
Ford’s position on public safety is nuanced.
Ford calls for increased police presence in dangerous areas combined with community enforcement and de-escalation.
For drugs, he wants reduced sentences, prevention programs, and overdose mitigation.
For guns: He wants to remove mandatory minimums but calls for comprehensive laws. He basically wants to restrict certain extra-lethal guns and reduce the punishment for owning a gun illegally, but questions remain about the specifics of these “comprehensive laws”
Crime has gone down significantly in Chicago in recent years.
Environment
Ford introduced legislation regulating siting and drainage of wind and solar facilities and co-sponsored bills on wetlands protection and data-center standards.
The Illinois Environmental Council gave him a 91% environmental voting score in 2023.
Ford’s most telling environmental move was a co-sponsorship of HB4773, the Illinois Climate Change Superfund Act. The Superfund would be paid for by the parties responsible for climate change (Big Oil, plastics, mining, etc.) and used for projects like flood control and urban heat reduction. The bill stalled in committee.
Despite a record of supporting environmental legislation in Illinois, Ford’s campaign has yet to articulate a comprehensive federal agenda.
Immigration
Ford, like most Americans, recognizes that America needs big-time immigration reform. Broad strokes: A legal path to citizenship for Dreamers, essential workers, and some illegal immigrants. He also wants more legal work visas and faster asylum processing.
Ford is vocally opposed to domestic unilateral federal enforcement, like ICE’s famed Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago back in September 2025. Chicago is a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. (Chicago Sun-Times/WBEZ candidate questionnaire)
Those are a few highlights of his platform.
These are some of the gaps:
Foreign Policy
Ford’s foreign policy rhetoric is one of diplomacy and cooperation. It’s mostly party-line material. He wants transparent defense spending, support for NATO and other allies, and a much higher threshold for US military intervention.
Ford is vocally against President Trump’s tariff moves and says U.S. policy on Taiwan should stay consistent with the One China policy.
Ford’s documented foreign policy is scarce, but here is one example: Immediately following the October 2023 assault by Hamas, Ford and 15 other Illinois Democrats signed a letter urging the United States and the international community to “end the inequality that is at the root cause of the violence.” His own statement that week condemned Hamas outright: “This monstrous crime has no justification. Period.”
He has also said Congress should make sure U.S. aid follows humanitarian law and protects civilian life.
But, in a 2026 questionnaire, Ford said: “I support continued U.S. military aid to Israel to help maintain its security, especially against terrorist organizations who openly call for its destruction.” So he came out boldly for peace, but 3 years later, he still wants “continued U.S. military aid.” This is the standard Democrat solution to US involvement with Israel: condemn when necessary, preach peace, and keep the money and weapons flowing. Interestingly, AIPAC’s super PAC spent about $5 million backing Melissa Conyears-Ervin, Ford’s main opponent in the primary.
Illinois corruption
In a bizarre court case, federal prosecutors charged Ford with 17 counts of felony bank fraud. All the charges were dropped, and Ford took a plea deal for a single misdemeanor conviction worth just 6 months of probation and a $1,000 fine. The conviction is modest, but the original charges would have amounted to decades. This dropped case (emphasis on dropped) was Ford’s biggest scandal by far.
Financial scandals like these hit home in Illinois, one of the most corrupt states in the country. The Democratic Party has held the House in Illinois for over 20 years. Despite a multitude of anti-corruption legislation, the state hasn’t successfully addressed the issue.
With nearly two decades in the Illinois legislature, evidence points to Ford being a center-left, largely party-line Democrat with a few issues for which he may cautiously stick out his neck.
The seat will likely be his for the foreseeable future. Time will tell if he changes the congressional machine or merely becomes part of its next iteration.
Danny Davis, the sitting Congressman representing the 7th District of Illinois, will retire at 85 in January. Davis was an infant when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
La Shawn Ford is 54.
