Harry Styles Sings the Song He Wrote for Liam Payne, Two Years Later
Styles debuted the unreleased acoustic song "What Is Enough" at Madison Square Garden on the anniversary of Payne's death.

Harry Styles, playing his own guitar at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, asked a sold-out crowd if he could sing them something nobody had heard. "I'm gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right," he said, Deadline reported.
The friend was Liam Payne, his bandmate in One Direction, and Friday was two years to the day since Payne died. By Styles's own count, the song he introduced as "What Is Enough" goes back to right around that loss. It stayed unreleased even as he put out a whole new album this year, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, Stereogum noted.
Payne was 31 when he fell from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires in October 2024. TheWrap, citing the Associated Press and local media, said he'd reportedly gone to Argentina to see another bandmate, Niall Horan, play a show.
Before the song, Styles talked about the Garden and how much it meant to him. He said he couldn't have gotten this far without the people around him. "And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends," he told the crowd, according to Stereogum. In TheWrap's transcript, he follows that with two flat words before moving on: "It's sad."
The moment got out fast. Deadline said Rolling Stone posted a clip on Instagram, and TheWrap ran a video that the pop news account Pop Crave shared on X.
The five members of One Direction came up together after finishing third on "The X Factor" in 2010. When Payne died, the four who were left, Styles, Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, mourned him in one shared message, as TheWrap recalled. They said they were devastated and that there'd be more to say in time, once everyone was able. On Friday, Styles said some of it with a guitar.
The tour he's on is headed for a screen, too. Styles is in the middle of a 30-night residency at the Garden that runs through Oct. 31, part of his Together, Together tour. Variety reported that documentary maker John Wilson is making a film about the tour with Universal Pictures Content Group, and Stereogum noted that Styles had recently been spotted filming with Wilson in New York.
Before he played a note, Styles turned the moment back on the people in the seats. He guessed that plenty of them had lost someone too, and said he hoped they hadn't. "It's just about looking after each other," he said, Deadline reported.
