Apple's first foldable iPhone gets a date. The $1,999 price is still a rumor.
The invitation went out August 26, 2026, for a 10 a.m. Pacific event in Cupertino. Reported foldable pricing runs from $1,999 to $2,500, and the cheaper iPhones are not expected until spring 2027.
Apple will hold a product event on September 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific, where it is expected to show its first foldable iPhone. The company announced the date on August 26, 2026, with an invitation carrying the line “Surprise and shine,” 9to5Mac reported. Apple has not confirmed the phone's name, its specifications or its price. The date has also been reported by Forbes.
For anyone in Los Angeles shopping for a phone this fall, the useful news is what is missing from the lineup. A standard iPhone is not expected this fall, the outlet reported. Apple is said to be splitting the launch, with the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 following in spring 2027.
What $2,000 buys, if the reporting holds
Most estimates put the foldable's starting price near $1,999, 9to5Mac reported, and some reports suggest configurations reaching $2,500. That would be the most expensive iPhone Apple has sold. Every one of those numbers is a rumor until September 9.
The hardware described in that reporting, all of it unconfirmed by Apple:
- A book-style fold with an outer display of 5.3 to 5.5 inches.
- An inner display of 7.6 to 7.8 inches.
- A titanium frame, an ultra-thin body and a display described as virtually crease-free.
- Touch ID in the power button rather than Face ID.
- Two cameras facing the user, and two more on the back.
The name is unsettled too. “iPhone Ultra” is the rumored branding, per 9to5Mac, and the outlet's own top-voted commenter argued Apple will land on “Fold” instead.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to keep the general designs and display sizes of the current models, the outlet reported, with the upgrades concentrated in display, camera and connectivity parts. The rumored changes are a main camera whose aperture varies, a Dynamic Island cut down in size, and Apple's own C2 modem for cellular. Four colors are expected: dark cherry, black, silver and light blue.
The rest of the September 9 list
Two watches are expected, the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4, neither with a major redesign, the outlet reported. New processors and health features are the reported focus. No refresh of the Apple Watch SE is on the current expectation list. AirPods 5 are expected; AirPods Pro with Visual Intelligence are not expected before next year.
Separately, Apple has announced new Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops for release on September 22, per the same report. The company's leadership also changes hands before the event: John Ternus takes over as chief executive on September 1, with Tim Cook moving to executive chairman.
